A brand new report has arrived and once again points to the upcoming CES 2012 convention as the place where Microsoft will present its next Xbox console, the oft rumored Xbox 720, while mentioning some new hardware specifications.

While Microsoft as well as Sony believe their current consoles, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, respectively, will live on for quite a few more years, rumors about next generation devices are being mentioned all over the web.

We've heard quite a lot of new ones concerning the next Xbox in recent weeks, some detailing that it might run on Windows 8 while others mentioning that it's still on track for a release in late 2012, with the possible announcement coming sometime at the beginning of the next year, probably at the CES show in January.

Now, courtesy of French website Xboxygen, which cites an inside source, the CES 2012 announcement is getting more likely, as Microsoft wants to impress the crowd and doesn't want to wait until the E3 2012 convention that takes place in June.

Besides this possible date for the announcement of the so-called Xbox 720, the report also mentions that two Microsoft teams are working on the actual device, with one group, called Infinity, polishing up the hardware specs, while another, called Loop, is in charge of its software.

Some technical specs are also included in the report, with the website claiming that a hex-core (aka six-core) CPU will power the new Xbox, alongside an AMD graphics card and 2GB of DDR3 RAM.

No word yet on other details, like what sort of optical drive will the new device use, but you can expect Microsoft to come up with a bigger proprietary format, as it made it clear that it doesn't want to adopt the Blu-ray technology from Arch rival Sony.

CES 2012 takes place between January 10 and 13, in Las Vegas, but you should take these rumors with a grain of salt until we actually get to see the new Xbox console.
