For now settles for LEGO

The two rival music simulators, Guitar Hero and Rock Band, appear to have taken divergent paths when it comes to content. The Activision franchise now seems devoted to putting out new games every year, with as many new songs as possible, with those titles dedicated to bands seen as secondary concerns. Rock Band, having just released a critically acclaimed game based on The Beatles, will probably seek out other great bands in order to fashion experiences around them. And the legendary Queen might just be next.

The BBC quoted guitarist Brian May as saying that “It's the ultimate accolade, to be portrayed in Lego. My dreams are all fulfilled now.” He then went on to mention that there was some talk, at the moment unofficial, about creating a Rock Band game featuring the music of Queen in a manner similar to the recently launched Beatles-themed title.

May did not offer any insight as to when the game might be announced or whether the other surviving members of the band had been contacted by MTV Games in order to offer the input on the possible videogame.

Of course, the music of Queen is not so closely guarded as that of The Beatles and several of their best known tracks have already been featured in Rock Band titles and can be downloaded from the store. Still, the idea of taking the band from relative obscurity up to the highs of their fame could certainly appeal to a wide array of gamers.

Queen also have the advantage of offering more pure rock songs to Rock Band, in comparison to the more mellow tracks of The Beatles and everyone would love playing the extended solos that May regularly performed.

Harmonix and MTV Games have made no statement related to a possible Queen project but an announcement could come early in 2010 with the game slated for a 2011 release date.
