Canadian mobile phone maker Research In Motion has just announced the availability of updated tools for developers interested in coming up with applications for the company's first tablet PC, the BlackBerry PlayBook.

We're referring here to the BlackBerry WebWorks SDK for Tablet OS, now available for download as version 2.0, and to the BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK for Adobe AIR, which reached a final version, 1.0.1.

We should also note that the later is now available for download along with a final flavor of the PlayBook simulator, also released as version 1.0.1.

The new BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK for Adobe AIR comes with special APIs for the PlayBook tablet, along with plug-ins for Adobe Flash Builder (version 4.0.1 or the 4.5 Burrito Preview Release), and with a Getting Started Guide.

“Adobe AIR SDK will have even more robust mobile support in the final version of Flash Builder 4.5, to be launched with Creative Suite 5.5 in May,” RIM notes in a recent blog post.

“Also, future enhancements to Adobe AIR will be brought to the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet by including new Adobe AIR runtimes in the device updates.”

The aforementioned BlackBerry WebWorks SDK 2.0 comes with a series of changes as well, including support for both the Tablet OS and Smartphones, RIM announced.

This is the first release aimed at bringing together the BlackBerry WebWorks SDK for Tablet OS and the BlackBerry Webworks SDK for Smartphones. Future releases should bring better alignment of APIs so that developers could target both type of devices with their applications.

One change that all developers would notice would be the fact that the WebWorks SDK for Tablet OS goes from 1.0.0.23 to 2.0, while the WebWorks SDK for Smartphone goes from 1.5.1 to 2.0.

“JavaScript APIs are now separated from the OS. This new architecture is designed to allow developers to easily modify and enhance the existing APIs and package them with their BlackBerry WebWorks application. This will also allow new APIs to be easily added to your application,” RIM explains on the new release.
