Courtesy of Feral Interactive, publisher of Mac ports, a demo of Battlestations Midway is now available for free download. Weighing in at 660 MB, this is a demo of a WWII-themed title heralded as Eidos' top-rated action strategy game for the Mac.

In May, Feral Interactive was confirming the upcoming availability of Battlestations: Midway, due out for the Mac on June 27th, 2008. The full version of the game packs "around 60 war machines including bombers, battleships, destroyers, carriers, planes and submarines for massive air, sea and undersea battles in WWII's Pacific theatre. You're in direct command of multiple warships, planes and submarines in this epic solo and online tactical action game," according to Feral.

In the game, players step up to the controls of the war machines whilst commanding the entire fleet, offline or online in huge multi-unit battles with up to 8 players. According to Feral, up to 100 Warships, Aircraft and Subs face off over the Mac multiplayer gaming service that is GameRanger. Developed by Eidos Studios Hungary, Battlestations Midway is a blend of action and strategy, featuring memorable battles, from Pearl Harbor to the Battle of Midway itself.

"We are delighted to have Feral bring Battlestations: Midway to the Mac platform," said Trevor Burrows, Brand Manager, Eidos at the time the game was being confirmed for Mac. "It's a game that delivers a new type of game play experience, and one that deserves to be seen and played by as wide an audience as possible."

Minimum system requirements call for: Processor: 1.83GHz, RAM: 512MB, Graphics: 128MB, Hard Disk: 4.3GB, Drive: DVD, Input: Mouse. For an optimum gameplay experience, recommended specs are: Processor: 2.4GHz, RAM: 1.5GB, Graphics: 256MB, Hard Disk: 4.3GB, Drive: DVD, Input: Multi-button Mouse. Mac owners should also note that Battlestations Midway does not support GMA graphics cards with shared RAM.

You can grab the demo of Battlestations Midway for Mac right HERE and play the "Islands of Solomon" level.

DOES NOT WORK WITH MAC OS 10.5.x (Latest Leopard)
Video Card incompatibility - serious (no fixes)

I got one very terse email reply from the Feral after my version worked the first day, and then never again. It freezes just as the play should begin.

I suspected the Graphics card, but since other games work smoothly, now I'm wondering if it's an incompatibility in the Mac Journaled file system.

"We regret that this game is not supported on Leopard at this time"

No patches, no workaround, just no support.

So, best of luck.

Great arcade type game that invokes strategy and doesn't require game controllers.

Works great on new Intel based Mac, unless you have Mac OS 10.5.x, which will need a "vos" patch. You download the file into a local game directory and then it works as advertised. If you have a brand new Mac, expect to go on-line and download the file after installing the game and before you bother to try it. The bug locks up the Graphics Controller and you have to force the machine to crash and reboot (holding the power button for 10 seconds).

Each Mission is different. It does take some time to figure out how to defeat what appears to be an impossible invasion force, but it can be done.

Good graphics, accurate, responsive, and plenty of on-line senerios.
