The recently announced Battlefield Play4Free will be the "best of Battlefield", according to James Salt, the senior producer of the upcoming online, free-to-play first person shooter.

EA is trying to once again succeed in the realm of free online PC games, after the lackluster Battlefield Heroes title, and has just revealed Battlefield Play4Free, a new, realistic take on online shooters, very similar to the recent Battlefield: Bad Company 2 full-pledged game.

According to Salt, the company brought together all of the best things from the Battlefield franchise, including different maps, weapons and experiences, all into one, single, free-to-play title.

"It's kind of the best of Battlefield," Salt revealed. "We've taken these classic maps that are all really popular, we've got the micro-transaction and growing your soldier over time aspect from Heroes and then we've got the classes from Bad Company that everyone likes.

"They've been glued together quite well to make a whole new experience."

Battlefield Play4Free will be completely free-to-play, as EA will get money from microtransactions for in-game equipment.

According to the announcement made at the beginning of the week, 16 vehicles, ranging from helicopters, jets, tanks or armored vehicles will be included, as well as weapons from the recent Bad Company series.

“Battlefield Play4Free is for serious shooter fans who are looking for a premium – but free – experience that rivals top console titles.”

Players will be able to choose classes and different loadouts, and buy new equipment with either in-game money, earned through completing various objectives, or spend real-life money on them, just like in Battlefield Heroes.

Sadly, Heroes, after a pretty successful debut, was broken by a series of changes implemented by EA to make more players spend real money on it.

Battlefield Play4Free will be launched next spring, but expect open beta stages and more details to be revealed closer to that date.
