The social aspect will not involve cooperative play

Karl Magnus Troedsson, the general manager of DICE, says that his team is eliminating the lone wolf single-player experience from the upcoming Battlefield 4, replacing it with a set of social features that will link players.

He tells the Official Xbox Magazine that, “Even though it's not co-op in the way that you're still playing by yourself, we want to add elements that makes it feel connected to the rest of the game and to your friends and what they're doing.”

It’s unclear whether DICE is talking about an enhancement of the Battlelog system that was introduced in previous titles in the series or whether the team has more ambitious plans.

The Battlefield 4 reveal only includes single player at the moment and DICE promises information about the multiplayer side of the experience later during the year.

The game will be out in the fall on the PC, current and next-gen consoles.
