Though she confirmed a fourth album as early as the summer of 2009, it’s just now that she can finally release it, Avril Lavigne notes in a post on her official webpage. Also here, she reveals the name of her first single off it.

In June 2009, Avril was saying she had completed work on her fourth studio album and, while she didn’t pinpoint an exact release date, her words made it sound as if it shouldn’t be long until it arrived in music stores.

Now, the singer reveals it was the label’s fault that her album didn’t come out sooner – but the good news is, she says, that it’s the work she’s most proud of so far.

“I’m done with my 4th record!!! Well, actually I have been done for a year… and now my record company have finally decided to release it. OMG… How nice! Thanks guys,” Avril writes with quite a hefty dose of sarcasm.

Nevertheless, the album came out just like she wanted it to, a very personal project in which she was involved every step of the way.

“I have been dying to get back out on the road and do what I love the most… PLAY MUSIC. I know you guys have been waiting for a long time… and so have I, but not by choice,” the singer notes.

“I have been sitting with this record for a year now. It’s really special to me. I have produced a couple tracks alone for the first time, written solo, with friends, I have pushed myself and I feel proud,” she adds.

Had it not been for all the bureaucracy with her record label, the album would have come out a year ago, Avril says in more or less delicate terms. On the bright side, the wait is now over.

“From the beginning of my career my message has always been to be yourself and stand up for what you believe in. Follow your heart,” she says.

This is also the message of the first single off the album, a track that she describes as the most pop-sounding, an anthem about being true to oneself.

“My first single off this record is called: ‘What the Hell.’ This song is the least personal song to me off this album. It’s a fun and funny anthem. It has a broad message about personal freedom,” Avril explains.

“What the Hell” will be released in January, with Avril starting to shoot for the official video in about 2 weeks. A release date for the album is still pending.
