Video game publisher Atlus US has announced that it has picked up the rights to publish the upcoming role playing game created by French developed Cyanide that will be based on the George R.R. Martin series A Song of Ice and Fire.

The publisher has not offered any information on when the game might be launched but has said that they plan to release the title on the PC but also the PlayStation 3 from Sony and the Xbox 360 from Microsoft.

It's not clear whether a version for the Nintendo Wii U home console will be introduced, considering that the role playing game will likely launch after the summer of 2012.

Cyanide has not offered too much information on their A Song of Ice and Fire project but they have confirmed that George R.R. Martin will be writing the story himself, which was not the case with the strategy game that also used the same universe.

Rumors have suggested that players will be able to create a character that does not appear in the books or in the HBO made television series and will take part in events which are linked to the main storylines of the universe, interacting with well known characters and even making some crucial decisions.

The A Song of Ice and Fire series will also spawn a free to play MMO which is being created by Bigpoint and there's also talk of a social game based on it being launched during 2012.

It will be interesting to see what Cyanide manages to create given the fact that even the author of the series is still working on it, ready to launch a sixth and seventh, although the number might grow.

A Game of Thrones: Genesis, the strategy game based on the universe, has some interesting gameplay mechanics but has failed to impress critics and buyers.
