Ubisoft has confirmed that it will be offering multiplayer assassinations in the next videogame in the Assassin's Creed series, which is set to arrive this year and will keep Ezio as the main protagonist, after his very good performance in the second game in the series.

In an investor conference that took place after the publisher announced its financial results for the third quarter of the current fiscal year, Ubisoft also said that the next Assassin's Creed title would see the main character go off to Rome in order to do battle with the Templars in the very heart of their secretive headquarters.

Ubisoft has previously stated that it plans to introduce cooperative multiplayer elements in all its big franchises in the coming year, which implies that Assassin's Creed will also offer two or even four players a chance to work together in order to dismantle a defense system and then take out a high value target. If the player wishes to go “lone wolf,” then Ubisoft might offer AI-powered companions or decrease the number of enemies in order to keep the difficulty level.

Ubisoft has also said that the downloadable content released for Assassin's Creed II, with the Battle of Forli already out and with the Bonfire of Vanities due next, is not needed in order for a player to understand the story of the series unfolding. The company has also hinted that it might be developing a proper sequel in parallel to the multiplayer experience coming in 2010.

The Assassin's Creed franchise has quickly become one of the most important for Ubisoft. The second game in the series has sold more than 8 million units since it was released and the addition of cooperative and competitive multiplayer will probably broaden its appeal even more.
