Apple Offers Free Recycling in the UK. 10% Discount on New iPods

- The initiative extends to computers, monitors and non-Apple phones as well

By: Filip Truta, Apple News Editor

This has just come in. Apple now offers free recycling of iPods and mobiles in the UK. Not exactly breaking news, I condone, but a touching fact for environmentalists and Apple fans alike, who, despite their snob-like attitude, actually consider the planet's welfare.

So, aspcadvisor.co.uk reports, Apple is not only offering free iPod
and iPhone recycling, but is also now accepting mobile phones from any manufacturer. As such, customers who wish to dispose of their old iPod/mobile phone the right way, simply fill in a form on Apple's website after which they are required to print out a mailing label, which they receive just after.

"Purchase any qualifying electronic equipment at an Apple Retail Store and receive free recycling of your old computer and monitor at any Apple Retail Store within 30 days, regardless of manufacturer," the company explains.

Still not enough to convince you that protecting the environment is good? No worries, Apple knew there would be nosy/lazy blokes who'd rather throw the old iPod in a lake on a natural reservation, so the Cupertino folks are offering returning customers a 10 percent discount upon the purchase of a new iPod. The discount deal, however, doesn't extend to returned iPod shuffles. Why? 'Cause they're dirt cheap, that's why. Plus, there's not much to recycle in there either.

"Environmental protection is a priority for the conservation of precious natural resources and the continued health of our planet. Apple recognises its responsibility as a global citizen and is continually striving to reduce the environmental impact of the work we do and the products we create," says Apple on its environmental website. The recycling take-back scheme extends to old computers and monitors as well, for customers looking to grab a new Mac computer or monitor.

One of the company's latest achievements in the environmental practice is developing the first MacBook Pro with mercury-free LED backlit display. Check them all out right here.
