Apple Fans Upset Over Upgraded iPhone and iPod Touch

And they have pretty good reasons too

Check this! Apple goes and launches new iPod touch and iPhone models, doubling their storage capacity to 32Gb and 16Gb respectively, right? So naturally, as a normal human being, your thoughts are: "Wow, that's great! Double the storage capacity for two great devices!" The reality, however, is bleak. Not for Apple, but for the consumer. Apple made no announcement whatsoever that the updated devices were coming, while people are still expecting the company to throw in a 3G iPhone...

...and certainly not one that sports 16 gigs of memory to
store pictures and tunes on. For crying out loud, Apple's phone is one step away from becoming self aware and cook your dinner at the rate it's getting updated, yet 3G is something it just can't handle. Why is that? You know what, it doesn't even matter anymore, because people are so very upset with Apple's move. Care for a sample of 'upsetness'? Very well.

According to informationweek.com, "the positive and negative backlash" following the news in question "was almost instantaneous." The publication also offers proof as to how angry readers were hearing that, instead of hooking up iPhones with 3G, Apple had merely increased its storage capacity, also upping its price by a hundred dollars in the process.

"Apple thinks we are all sheep," says the upset reader. "After spending 400-1200 bucks for an iPhone, iPod, iBook, or whatever Apple makes, a few months later they come out with a different color, more memory or storage or make it a little more pretty and all of us run and get the new stuff....

I guess [what] I am tying to say is bah bah bah bah...baaahhh..bah bah bah bah bah.

Now where is my Credit Card, Steve Jobs called."

Not exactly the most relevant comment one could post, but it (literally) screams loud and clear: Apple, you pulled the fast one on us!

Now where's my credit card? No reason in particular, I just can't spot it anywhere.

No one is upset at product improvements - they are inevitble. Only professional whiners can possibly gripe at this news, and only because they are looking to criticise a popular company.

It is no better to be informed of future updates since you never know when you can get your hands on them and end up holding on to your old product for longer than you wanted to. This is what happened when I was waiting for a Motorola RAZR. I gave up in the end! Much better to have a look at what is available NOW and just go an buy the one that suits you best.

I am outraged that Apple is charging early buyers of the iPod Touch $20 for a system update that ought to be free.

While I understand Apple's decision to charge money for the new applications the new $20 "application pack" also includes a SYSTEM UPDATE in the form of the home page editing, web clips, and lyrics features. All of these are updates to the currently existing iPod Touch software and NOT new applications, which means that they ought to be free to all users of the iPod Touch.

Adding insult to injury these applications are all hidden in the 1.1.3 system update, a whopping 104.4mb file that all users must download if they want to fix bugs in the system. These applications can only be used when you pay Apple $20 to "unlock" them, but even if you decide not to buy them they stay on your iPod taking up precious space that could be used for songs, videos, or photos.

Apple is normally wonderful when it comes to providing system support and updates, but having them shaft early adopters and loyal fans like this is offensive and shows that Apple has absolutely no regard for the iPod Touch community.
