Samsung Galaxy S, last year's flagship Android-based handset from the South Korean handset vendor, started to receive the Android 2.2 Froyo OS update in fall last year, and was expected to taste it at carriers around the world sometime in November or December, but some operators, including Verizon in the US, were left behind.

The Galaxy S smartphone was launched at Verizon as Samsung Fascinate, and the carrier has just started to deliver the aforementioned OS update for its users.

Apparently, the operator already sent the software update out to some of its users, though only to a few of them. However, it should kick off the full roll-out starting today, and is expected to complete it in a matter of weeks.

“Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce a new software update, i500.ED01, for your Samsung Fascinate. This update includes numerous enhancements and improvements, including an update to Android OS 2.2 (Froyo),” the carrier notes on its support website.

Android 2.2 Froyo brings a nice range of enhancements into the mix, including support for Adobe's Flash 10.1, or for the installation of applications on the memory card.

Moreover, as soon as users would have it installed on their devices, they would also enjoy faster loading of webpages that include JavaScript, Bing Voice Search, as well as preloaded V CAST Apps and Samsung Media hub.

In addition to the aforementioned enhancements that the Android 2.2 update would bring into the mix, users would also be able to enjoy:

- Move messages between folders in the Exchange email client with ease. - Easily delete all messages in your sent and trash folders within your Exchange email account without being prompted to close the application. - When using the Swype feature, sentences are now displayed with the proper use of upper and lower case letters. - “Dialed Calls” correctly displays within the dialer application. - When connected to a Bluetooth device, pressing the speaker button will properly activate the speakerphone. - Turning on the backlight when the phone is mounted in the car dock will no longer automatically activate the speakerphone. - Improvements to the Voice Commands application allows you to accurately search contacts by name and number, even when the Contact List contains duplicates. - Color and text scheme in the Calendar has been improved for better readability. - “Feeds and Updates” widget improvements for auto-refresh feature.

We should also note that the new software update would allow users to set applications to update automatically as soon as newer versions are available in the Android Market.

Verizon customers who own a Samsung Fascinate should head to the settings menu and check for the availability of the new software update. Additional info on the new firmware and on the update process can be found on Verizon's website here.
