British actor Andrew Garfield wouldn’t even dream of using pick-up lines in bars because he finds the whole thing too “crass” and insulting for women. Of course, being in a year-long relationship must also have a say in this.

In a recent interview cited by Contact Music, Garfield was asked whether he’d ever consider going to a bar to pick up a girl, and it seems that the very concept of picking up girls is heinous to him.

In fact, even if he weren’t in a serious relationship, he still wouldn’t do that because he believes clichés like pick-up lines can literally kill a budding romance.

Then, there’s also the question of whether he’d have enough confidence and guts to actually go out there and hit on girls – Andrew says he couldn’t.

“I’m terrible. I have absolutely no idea. I’ve also always kind of baulked at the concept of ‘the game’,” the actor says of what he feels about the whole “dating game” and whether he’d be able to make a killing if he were single.

“You have all these automaton men going into bars saying the same lines, kind of half-insulting a girl in the hope they’re going to sleep with them,” he says of pick-up lines.

The whole idea of walking up to a woman and serving her lines that have been specifically invented for the purpose of “hitting on her” is something that Andrew can’t understand.

“It’s just so inappropriate and crass and it takes all the romance and mystery out of courtship and out of meeting someone and just sparking something. I always just like to leave that stuff up to chance,” the actor says.

Of course, as noted above, being in a relationship (with actress Shannon Woodward) makes it easier for Garfield to avoid ending up in situations in which he’d have to pick up girls using standard lines.
