The Predator did it

It's now official. The Aliens RPG that has been under development at Obsidian has been confirmed to be canceled by a post on the forums of the game. Rumors that the game had been on hold appeared as early as February but fans of the Aliens franchise hoped that it would still be done at some point, after last week brought the good news that Aliens: Colonial Marines, which is being done by Gearbox, is still in development, following premature rumors of its demise.

The post simply says that “Rumors have circled around a bit regarding the fate of the Aliens role playing game that Obsidian and Sega had been working on. Unfortunately, it is true that we are no longer working on the game, and we wanted to finally announce that officially to everyone who has been following its development.”

The forums are also being closed down, which is pretty good confirmation that Obsidian is not interested in bringing the project back to life at any point. It's a shame, given the fact that a game built around a squad of Marines who progress in fighting prowess as they take out more and more enemies sounded really cool.

Obsidian is busy at the moment working on another role playing game, called Alpha Protocol, which is centered on espionage. The title will be published by SEGA, which was also overseeing the Aliens RPG project, and is set to arrive on the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360 and the PC during fall.

Meanwhile, Aliens fans can look forward to playing the all new Aliens vs. Predator, which is coming in the spring of 2010 and will offer gamers the chance to play as the three iconic characters in different campaigns. If that's not enough, the Gearbox-developed Colonial Marines should be released closely after that. It seems that 2010 will be Aliens year.
