Adam Lambert, the runner-up on the latest season of American Idol, has never made a secret of his orientation in his personal life, albeit he only came out in a special issue of Rolling Stone magazine. Fans clearly have no issue with that, since they have come to love him for his music, but that’s not to say fundamentalists feel the same way, as ContactMusic can confirm.

News just transpired in the media that Adam, along with the other “enablers” from American Idol were the target of a public protest over this past weekend. Fundamentalists gathered outside a venue where an AI concert was taking place, in San Jose, California, holding cardboard signs and apparently crying out against Lambert.

All were members of the “controversial Westboro Baptist Church,” the aforementioned publication further says. It is not yet known whether protesters had a specific complaint against Adam or whether it was just his orientation that made them so upset with him.

Not that Adam is letting this get to him, finalist Michael Sarver adds. This is not the first and, unfortunately, will probably not be the last time that he’s targeted for who and how he is in his personal life, and has that thrown in his face to discredit him as an artist. So far, Adam has played it cool against all criticism, just once or twice speaking up in his “defense,” to say that, while he feels no need to justify himself in the media (referring to his Rolling Stone interview), he only does it because it’s what many fans want to know of him.

Sarver too thinks Lambert shouldn’t let disruptions like this one affect him in any way, as he shares on his Twitter page. “Funny how people think it’s a good idea to mess with a big Texan and his AI (American Idol) family. Adam is just fine, shakes it off and so should we. We are together in this thing. You mess with one you mess with all ten. We are strong and we are 1. For those outside protesting I say do not judge less ye be judged yourself. Guys don’t mind these people, we are a strong family.” Sarver, also a finalist on American Idol, writes.

In the meanwhile, as we also reported some time ago, Lambert is spending his time in between the recording studio and the AI tour. For his debut album, he has teamed up with Lady Gaga’s producer, RedOne, who has also worked with the likes of Akon, Sugababes, Kat Deluna, Enrique Iglesias, Michael Jackson and even New Kids on the Block.
