April 19th marked the availability of the first software updates for Windows phone 7 handsets on the airwaves of wireless carrier AT&T. We're referring, of course, to the pre-NoDo and NoDo software updates, which are now available for Samsung Focus and LG Quantum users in the United States.

As previously reported, Microsoft themselves announced that the update would be delivered to these handsets, and that the third WP7 device at AT&T, the HTC Surround, would have to wait a little longer for it to arrive.

The update process would have to be performed through the Zune software on the desktop PC. Users eager to get the upgraded firmware should fire the application up, connect the handset and manually search for the update.

“If you have a Focus or Quantum, remember that you’ll be installing two updates. The first notification you’ll see is for the February update,” Eric Hautala, GM, Customer Experience Engineering, Microsoft, notes in a recent blog post.

“Once you’ve installed that, you’ll be ready for the March update, which includes copy and paste, improved Marketplace search, and faster app launching.

“Your phone checks for new updates every three days, so be aware that the update notifications might not come right away - or arrive back to back.”

Apparently, the February update might cause some issues on handsets, and users might receive the 800705B4 error while installing it. If that happens, you should head to this article on Microsoft's website to learn what can be done.

As soon as the February update has been installed, users would have to unplug the mobile phone, and then plug it back in to install the next software update, NoDo, or the March update.

Those who would like to have a look at step-by-step installation instructions should head here. More info on the installation process, as well as troubleshooting steps for common errors, and more, can be found on Microsoft's Update Central website.
