Verizon Wireless is not the only mobile phone carrier in the United States gearing up for the release of new handsets running under the Android operating system. AT&T is also preparing such devices, and some more info on one of them has just emerged online. Along with other devices, the wireless carrier is getting ready to add to its offering a successor of the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket smartphone that was launched on its airwaves last year.

The new device, called Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD, has just been spotted at the Federal Communication Commission, where it received all the necessary blessings to start being used on AT&T’s network.

For those out of the loop, we should note that this is only one of the new devices that AT&T plans on launching with support for its LTE network in the coming months.

It will be a high-end device when released, through it remains to be seen when exactly that would happen, since AT&T hasn’t provided specific info on the matter as of yet.

As Pocketnow writes in a recent article, it is interesting to note that the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD is said to feature support for two battery covers, one of which was meant for use with NFC (Newr Field Communication) capabilities.

AT&T isn’t in the NFC game for the time being, but it appears that it might soon start offering support for the capability.

The upcoming handset will pack a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor when released, along with a 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED screen of a 1280×720 pixels resolution, great for playing games on the go.

Moreover, it will feature an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with LED flash and support for 1080p HD video recording, along with a 3-megapixel camera on the front, great for making video calls.

The smartphone will also include support for AT&T’s LTE network, along with 3G and WiFi connectivity, Bluetooth, and the like. AT&T made the phone official at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
