AT&T has just revealed its new mobile barcode reading application for smartphones. The software can be downloaded for free from the carrier's website and is compatible a wide range of smartphones, including those running Android and BlackBerry platforms.

Further, AT&T also stated that it intends to improve and enhance the AT&T Mobile Barcode Services with a suite of products and services that should help sellers to provide a smooth experience to their customers.

Our focus on the opportunity that mobile barcode offers businesses to connect directly with their consumers is the latest example of the work AT&T is doing to drive the emergence of new categories of devices and applications that are enhanced by wireless network connectivity,” said Michael Antieri, President, Advanced Enterprise Mobility Solutions, AT&T Business Solutions. “Over the course of this year, we intend to help our business customers create measurable and fully managed brand experiences with mobile barcodes to better interact with their consumers.”

The AT&T Mobile Barcode Services provided by the carrier include: AT&T Code Scanner (a free mobile application which helps users scan 2D and 1D (UPC and EAN) barcodes found in magazines, stores, and online). Those interested can download the free application directly on their device through BlackBerry App World, Android Market or go to http://scan.mobi on their mobile device.

The carrier also offers users the AT&T Create-a-Code feature, which is a free service that allows consumers to create their own personal mobile barcodes by visiting www.att.com/createacode. The code created can be used to direct friends and family to various products such us, v-cards, Facebook account, personal blog or favorite website.

Another tool offered by AT&T is called Code Management Platform, and it has been built especially for those businesses that need to create, manage and measure mobile barcodes campaign experiences for their customers. The service is also available for AT&T’s Mobile Barcode Charter Program members, but it will soon be available for all business segments.
