Mobile phone carrier AT&T has just announced the launch of its first GoPhone smartphone for its customers, the LG Thrive, which is based on Google's Android 2.2 Froyo operating system, which should hit shelves on April 17th.

This is the first Android smartphone to be put for sale for AT&T's GoPhone customers, and would be accompanied by a post-paid version, launched under the name of LG Phoenix on April 17th too.

“Delivering users on-the-go access to the growing Android Market, LG Thrive will be the first Android smartphone available for GoPhone customers,” the wireless carrier announced.

Moreover, the carrier notes that the new device comes with a new prepaid data package, offering 500 MB of data for $25. Users purchasing the phone would also be able to opt for a $0.10/min Plan or Smartphone $2/day Unlimited Talk and Text Plan.

Those customers interested in the LG Thrive would have to choose a data package to access data services. They can opt for $25 for 500MB, $5 for 10MB (previously $4.99 for 1MB), or $15 for 100MB (previously $19.99). These plans also include unlimited Wi-Fi usage.

The specifications list of the new device would include a 3.2-inch (320 x 480 pixel) touch display, 600MHz application processor, Quad-band GSM / Tri-band 3G (world capable), HSDPA 7.2 3G data speeds, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities.

The handset comes with 160MB User Memory, microSD storage (up to 32GB), 2GB microSD card installed, a 3.2MP Auto-focus camera on the back, aGPS capable, 1500 mAh long-life battery, and with Text/Picture and Video Messaging and POP3/IMAP/Gmail/EAS email support.

“LG Thrive boasts the latest Android features, including robust HTML browsing, integrated synching of Google account features, Facebook and Twitter apps for social networking, flexible personalization with up to seven customizable home screens, and unlimited Wi-Fi usage,” AT&T notes.

The LG Phoenix comes with the same features, and adds Mobile Hotspot and data tethering support into the mix.

On April 17th, the LG Thrive will go on sale in silver at $179.99. The LG Phoenix will be put for sale in dark blue for $49.99 and with the signing of a two-year agreement with the wireless carrier.
