According to some of the latest rumors around the Internet, AT&T was about to price the tethering options for the iPhone at as much as $55, as a source within the carrier seems to have stated recently. After initial rumors that the price could be $70 for the service, the cost was thought to be lower, yet it seems that they weren't as accurate as one might think.

After a series of reports on the said price, AT&T revealed on its Facebook page that all the rumors were false. At least, when it comes to an unlimited data plan, that is, though no further details have been unveiled whatsoever. Here it what AT&T had to say about the tethering price rumors, “There are a lot of reports out there, but wanted you guys to know that rumors of $55 tethering plan on top of an unlimited data plan are false. We’ll have more news to share when the iPhone tethering option is closer to launch.”

Those that are not yet aware of what tethering on the iPhone means should know that it includes the ability to use the smartphone as some sort of a modem for either a laptop or a desktop PC. In case the wireless carrier had in mind the $55 price for the service, that might have driven a lot of its users mad. The minimum plan required for the iPhone is priced at $70 per month, which is rather costly; adding $55 to that sum would not be the most fortunate thing to do.

We'll still have to wait a little longer to learn how much the iPhone tethering will actually cost, though we should note that in other countries, it comes at a rather low cost. According to IntoMobile, users in Austria can enjoy it for free, while those that live in Finland can have it for as low as $14 (unlimited 384 kbps), or for $42 (unlimited 2 Mbps), which doesn't sound too bad. Hopefully, AT&T will also unveil a fairly reasonable price when the time comes, so stay tuned to learn more details on this.
