Young star wins New Artist of the Year, is completely overwhelmed by the moment

Ariana Grande, the 20-year-old star who rose to fame on Nickelodeon but is now forging a career for herself as a pop artist, won her first major award last night at the 2013 American Music Awards – and she gave an acceptance speech to remember.

You can see it in full above.

Clearly, Ariana knew there was a chance of winning the New Artist of the Year Presented by Kohl’s award, because she’d been nominated, but she probably never imagined it would actually happen. At least, that’s how she acted when her name was called out.

Everything, from the awkward way of going up the stairs because her dress was too tight, to her cute thank-you to the fans who voted for her, and the fact that she kept the list her mother had written, with the names of all the people she was to thank in case she won, in her bra, was absolutely adorable.

When so many pop stars are coached on every little thing they must say or do in certain situations, Ariana’s reaction to winning seemed absolutely genuine and was, because of it, very refreshing. And cute too.
