Leading digital media company 7digital announced on Tuesday the launch of a new application for BlackBerry smartphone users, one that will offer them access to its MP3 Music Store. According to the company, the new application is available for free and can be downloaded either from its website or from the BlackBerry App World.

The new 7digital application for BlackBerry smartphones enables users to browse, discover and purchase songs from the 7digital catalog, which includes at the moment more than seven million high-quality DRM-free MP3 tracks. Users will be able to enjoy content from all four major music labels, as well as songs from various independent labels.

“We’re excited to be bringing high-quality MP3 over-the-air downloads to the BlackBerry platform. This application demonstrates exactly why we developed our API, to allow third-party developers to integrate digital music download functionality into their product offerings,” said Ben Drury, CEO of 7digital. Tyler Lessard, VP of global alliances & developer relations, Research In Motion, added, “The ability to buy tracks and albums on the move, or on impulse, is what the consumer wants. We're excited to see 7digital embrace the BlackBerry platform and help developers bring this unique and powerful music service to BlackBerry customers.”

BlackBerry users who download apps while on the go will receive them over GPRS, EDGE or 3G in a lower bit-rate format, so as to speed up the downloads, yet the application's integrated Wi-Fi Auto-Sync technology will download the high-quality 320kbps MP3 format of the track as soon as connectivity with a Wi-Fi network is available. According to the company, the new app has been developed together with DevelopIQ, a BlackBerry Alliance Program member, based on 7digital's API.

A built-in digital locker within the app will also offer users the possibility to access tracks previously purchased from the company. In addition, a media player included in the application will enable users to listen to the tracks, and to enjoy stereo Bluetooth streaming. Searches can be performed by artist, track title or album title, and previews of the tracks are available before purchase. The new app is available for BlackBerry Bold, BlackBerry Curve 8900, BlackBerry Tour, BlackBerry Curve 8520 and BlackBerry Storm.
