Sony forces us to get a HDTV

If you don't have a state of the art TV, you might think twice about purchasing a PS3. Yeah, we all know that it is next-gen, but if you own a TV that doesn't rise up to today's high-tech standards, it might become "low-gen.

IGN brings the word that PS3 enthusiasts that own an older HD set featuring only 480i, 480p and 1080i resolution will probably be disappointed as they will have to settle for a downsized resolution upon playing PS3 games. Presumably, the console will downsize the image of the TV down to 480p, and will not upscale it to 720p or 1080i.

Games designed for 720p mode have been tested by IGN on older television sets, and games like Resistance: Fall of Man, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 and Need for Speed Carbon were sized down to 480p instead of upscaling to 1080i.

I don't know how many of you understand what I've just explained, but I consider this to be quite serious, as Sony forces us to get a next-gen HDTV also. On top of paying some US$ 600 for a PS3, we will need to come up with a few extra US$ thousands to get a TV that suits the console.
