Galaxy TAB P1000, powered by an A8 processor

Samsung has definitely been active lately, especially on the mobile front, having released the Omnia Pro 4 and Omnia Pro 5, for instance, just yesterday. Still, even though it seems to deal mainly with phones, hard drives and Blu-ray combos, it looks like the company still has more than enough resources to covertly, more or less, develop tablets. Currently dubbed Galaxy Tab P1000, a certain 7-inch slate has somehow managed to show up in a video recording that reveals some of its design elements.

The tablet is only 'currently' known as Galaxy tab P1000 because, just a couple of days ago, a different report labeled it as Galaxy Tape. According to Engadget, though, this is not the same device as that one, as the Tab has a different set of 'buttons', actually touch-sensitive keys, along the bottom. The Galaxy Tape, as it was called, had a hardware D-pad.

Samsung's offer employs an AMOLED display, a large dialer screen, an unknown number of ports and, possibly, a proprietary docking connector along the bottom. It also appears as though the Tab will be able to function as a cellphone. Unfortunately, the actual hardware is not completely known, but Slashgear suggests that the configuration will be centered around and ARM-based A8 processor, clocked at 1.2GHz, and will include 16GB of internal storage, a microSD slot and the Android 2.2 operating system.

The Galaxy TAB P1000 will supposedly be tasked with taking on the iPad. Of course, this is what all such devices have to do, since the iPad is truly the actual representative of the slate market and the one to whom all newcomers are compared. Unfortunately, it is still unclear when and at what price this Tab ships, but it shouldn't be long, considering that 8-inch and 10-inch versions are already planned for the ongoing year.
