4MLinux developer Zbigniew Konojacki informs Softpedia today on the general availability of the first point release of his recently launched 4MLinux 23.0 operating system.

4MLinux 23.1 is the latest version of the independently developed GNU/Linux distribution, and it's a minor maintenance update that bumps the kernel packages to Linux 4.9.61 LTS and upgrades the components of the 4MLinux Server bundle to Apache 2.4.29, MariaDB 10.2.10, and PHP 7.0.25.

"This is a minor (point) release in the 4MLinux STABLE channel, which comes with the Linux kernel 4.9.61. The 4MLinux Server now includes Apache 2.4.29, MariaDB 10.2.10, and PHP 7.0.25 (see this post for more details)," said Zbigniew Konojacki in the release announcement.

Existing 4MLinux 23.0 users can now upgrade to version 23.1

The 4MLinux 23.1 maintenance release also updates some popular applications like the Audacity audio editor, UNetbootin utility for creating bootable Live USBs, and the PeaZip archiving tool to their latest versions at the moment of writing this article.

Existing 4MLinux 23.0 users can update their installations right now by running the "zk update" command in the terminal emulator. On the other hand, if you want to install the operating system on new systems, you need to download the 4MLinux 23.1 live ISO image.

Launched in early November, 4MLinux 23.0 is the latest stable series of the independently-developed Linux-based operating system, supported with software updates and security patches until March 2018, when the next major release, 4MLinux 24.0, hits the streets.

4MLinux 23.0 brought much-improved support for FAAC, GIF, JPEG 2000, Monkey's Audio, and Musepack file formats, out-of-the-box support for LVM, RAID, and SCSI devices, and support for installing 4MLinux on EXT2, EXT3, EXT4, Btrfs, XFS, ReiserFS, JFS, and NILFS2 partitions.

Zbigniew Konojacki currently works on 4MLinux 24.0, which is now available for public beta testing. Currently, 4MLinux 24.0 Beta uses GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) 7.1.0 as default compiler and it's still powered by the long-term supported Linux 4.9 kernel series.
