16GB iPhone, Meet Old SIM Card

However, Apple advises that people simply use the new card

Just yesterday we talked about angry iPhone/iPod fans who weren't very satisfied with Apple's introduction of two updated devices - the 16 gig iPhone and the 32 gig iPod touch. While buyers of the updated iPod touch seem to be getting along with their new device, updated iPhone owners can't say the same about themselves.

Apparently, some have failed identifying themselves
as existing AT&T customers after inserting their old SIM card into the phone, while others wonder whether or not the 16 giger adds another two years to their AT&T contract. Concerning the latter issue, "while some people have claimed no extension whatsoever, others have been angered to discover an extra obligation," tuaw.com posts. Confusion couldn't be greater this time around on Apple forums. One dazzled iPhone owner posts:

"I know that I will have to buy a new 16 GB iPhone if I want one but how do I go activating it? Do I put the old sim in or keep the new one in it? When i activate with iTunes I choose the keep old number or whatever option right? Do I have to pay for an activation fee?"

The burning question, though, remains: will using an old SIM card with a new 16GB iPhone (or any other iPhone for that matter) work? The answer is simple (although the procedure isn't): yes, it will. The SIM card is not locked to a particular iPhone. But you need to follow a few steps and confirm with iTunes. Still, Apple advises that people simply use the new card, and once again identify themselves as an existing customer, to avoid fuss.

But there is an advantage to not activating the new SIM card. As the new iPhone and old SIM get acquainted, your new SIM card remains untouched, so if you decide one day that 16 gigs of space and the whole Internet just don't do it for you anymore, a used iPhone packed with a new, untouched SIM card makes a pretty good deal - so you'll have no trouble selling it.

Of course, Apple would have to roll out an even smarter device to make people want to sell their 16GB Apple phone.
