'If you can't beat'em, join'em'

Software pirates are the developer's worst enemy, so at EA, they are trying to put an end to the war with piracy, offering "Fifa Online" for free. Yes, you must be wondering "so?where's the catch?" There is one don't worry.

They have divided the cost of FIFA into micropayments, sold as enhancements. After downloading it, you may be faced with the need to extend a career, or customize some features and that will cost you some money.

American developer, marketer, publisher, and distributor of computer and video games, Electronic Arts made a smart move and answered back to piracy all across the world. This could very well be taken as an example by all developers out there; but will this go far? I don't think so and neither does EA, I'm sure, but it surely pays off: EA has been offering FIFA Online for free in South Korea only for the past eight months and since last May, EA has sold approximately 700,000 enhancements.

So, it wasn't a bad idea at all; but what does that do to the game itself? Surely nobody wants to go surfing the net for every other 10 minutes of the time allocated to playing the game.
