We have some good news for you today if you're one of those who dreamed of installing the Android-based LineageOS mobile operating system on your first-generation Google Pixel or Google Pixel XL smartphone.

The LineageOS project continues the legacy of the famous CyanogenMod project, which was probably the most popular open-source mobile operating system based on Google's Android mobile platform. Now LineageOS takes the baton from CyanogenMod and aims to become as popular as its predecessor by offering support for devices that haven't received a CyanogenMod port.

After releasing a Raspberry Pi 3 port earlier this year, based on Android 8.1 Oreo, LineageOS is now officially available on the first-generation Google Pixel (codename sailfish) and Google Pixel XL (codename marlin ) smartphones. The latest version, LineageOS 15.1 can now be installed on any of these devices no matter what Android version they're running.

More devices with A/B partitions will soon support LineageOS

LineageOS recently received support for A/B partitions, which enables seamless updates on Android devices, which means that it will soon be available on a wide range of smartphones that support A/B partitions. The first smartphones to receive official LineageOS support are the Xiaomi Mi A1 and Motorola Moto Z2 Force, and now Google Pixel and Pixel XL join them.

More devices with A/B partitions will soon be officially supported by LineageOS, though many of them already have unofficial ports available on the XDA Developers community forums, including the Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel XL 2. To install LineageOS 15.1 on your Google Pixel or Google Pixel XL mobile phone, download the official builds from here and here.

LineageOS is currently supported on a wide range of mobile devices, including but not limited to the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, Nexus 7 (2013) 4G, Google Pixel C, Nexus 9 (Wi-Fi and LTE), Nexus Player, Fairphone 2, ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser, ASUS ZenFone 8.0, OnePlus 3/3T, OnePlus 5/5T, OnePlus One, OnePlus 2, and numerous others.
