Yahoo sees no reason in keeping its Mail app alive

Yahoo has decided to kill off the Mail app for Windows 10, with users now prompted to switch to the browser should they want to access their inbox.

There’s no official announcement in this regard from Yahoo, but a notification displayed to some users indicates that the company is giving up on the application. Instead, users are asked to launch the browser and point it to the official mail.yahoo.com website to continue sending and receiving emails.

“Your Windows 10 app will stop working after May 22. Thank you for using Windows 10 app to check your Yahoo Mail. Going forward, please check your email in any browser on your computer,” the prompt displayed when launching the application reads.

App going dark earlier than expected

On the other hand, it turns out that there are systems where the Yahoo Mail app has already stopped working even before the May 22 deadline, though it’s very clear that this wasn’t supposed to happen.

What’s important to know is that even if the application stops working, all your data is still there and you can easily access it using your browser. On the other hand, you might miss on a number of features brought by the official app, so you might want to have a look at third-party apps or even the official Outlook Mail app in Windows 10 to continue getting mails right on the desktop.

As far as the reason for giving up on the Windows 10 app is concerned, Yahoo hasn’t said a single thing about it, though there’s almost no doubt that it’s all happening because of the small number of users.

Yahoo has been hit by several big security issues in the last couple of years and this has contributed to declining user base all over the world. Furthermore, its Windows 10 app has never been really successful, with most Yahoo users choosing to connect to their inbox in the browser anyway, so the killing off is unlikely to impact a significant number of people.
