14 DAY TRIAL // Even though it still gets security updates, Windows 10 Mobile is pretty much a dead platform, and 99.99 percent of its users have already migrated to Android or iOS.
But this doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone is ready to leave their Windows phones behind. Instead, skilled developers previously committed to Windows 10 Mobile are still trying all kinds of experiments on Windows phones, and by the looks of things, many of them actually succeed.
One of these is an attempt to install not one, not two, not three, but four different operating systems on a Windows phone, a thing that obviously has no real benefit, but which instead proves just how much potential Microsoft’s Lumia device family had.
Gustave M. has published a video showing that he managed to get a Windows phone to run Windows 10 IoT Core, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and Windows 10 Mobile all side by side. While it’s not yet clear how flawlessly these operating systems run on the device, previous experiments have shown that most of the challenges could be addressed with the right drivers and code updates.
The future of Windows phones
As mentioned, there’s no real benefit from having all these operating systems running on a Windows phone, and it would be substantially more helpful if someone managed to get Android running on a Microsoft Lumia.
Android is currently the world’s number one mobile operating system and getting it to run on a Windows phone would keep the device around for a little longer.
In the meantime, Microsoft keeps issuing security updates for Windows 10 Mobile, and it’ll continue to do so until mid-2019 when the platform officially reaches the end of support. New features and devices are no longer being developed for Windows 10 Mobile.
