Microsoft sells fewer Lumia phones each year

Even though competition is always good in order to progress, Windows Phone failed to establish itself as the third major mobile platform on the market.

With less than 2 percent market share worldwide and only a handful of smartphones being released each month, it looks like it's the end of the road for Windows Phone.

Microsoft has just confirmed it has sold 4.5 million Lumia smartphones during FY16 Q2, less than half compared with the same period a year ago.

However, the small number of sold Lumia smartphones reported by Microsoft doesn't come as a surprise since the Redmond-based company changed its strategy back in July 2015 when it decided to release fewer mobile phones.

Since Windows Phone's launch five years ago, Microsoft and Nokia combined sold more than 100 million smartphones, far behind Android and iOS which sold more than 4.5 billion during the same period of the time.

Instead of improving year over year, Windows Phone's market share spiraled down in the last couple of months and it doesn't look like the situation will get better even though Microsoft is expected to launch the so-called Surface Phone.

Windows Phone might remain Microsoft's pet project

Naturally, Windows 10 Mobile will continue to live on, possibly as Microsoft's pet project, but the mobile platform will never be able to seriously compete with Android and iOS.

Even Microsoft seems to have given up trying to push new Windows Phone devices and apps into the market. The Redmond-based company is now focusing on bringing some of its apps and services to Android and iOS, something unthinkable a few years ago.

The lack of a solid smartphones lineup and apps and a very low market share could perhaps mean the end of the road for Windows Phone.

There will probably be a few Windows Phone-related announcements coming from Microsoft in the next few months, but they will be the swan song of a platform that could have been great but, sadly, failed.
