Concept video goes rival in a matter of hours

Pretty much everyone now agrees that Windows 10 Mobile is dead, despite many users out there hoping to see Microsoft having a change of mind and overhauling the platform at the very last minute.

In the meantime, however, the more skilled designers who are still committed to Windows phones come up with more or less advanced concepts describing the ways the operating system could be saved, and one such idea went viral during the weekend.

Simply called Windows 95 Mobile, this video isn’t necessarily a concept envisioning the future of Windows phones, but more of an interesting experiment to show how an old operating system like Windows 95 could make its way to smartphones.

Cortana is replaced with Clippy as the personal assistant, the interface uses the classic theme with a taskbar at the top of the screen, and the live tiles are still there, only that they don’t have the look of Windows 10 Mobile, but the traditional skin in old Windows.

Microsoft’s mobile future

Certainly, this is a nice video to watch and while it doesn’t make any sense to discuss whether Windows 95 would be a good choice for mobile devices, the interface would certainly appeal to many users who’d like the classic skin on their phones.

In the meantime, Windows 10 Mobile won’t change too much ahead of its retirement next year, while Microsoft’s mobile future is all about Android and iOS apps and services and a new device codenamed Andromeda. But as compared to Windows phones, Andromeda won’t be a smartphone per se, but a new multi-form factor device also expected to boast phone calling capabilities.

Andromeda, however, is likely to run full Windows 10, which means that Windows 10 Mobile as we know it is going to get the ax next year and never come back in the same form.
