14 DAY TRIAL // Windows 11 comes with a new approach for the Start menu and the taskbar, as Microsoft has moved all icons to the center of the screen for what the company calls an idea that’s supposed to increase productivity in the long term.
And while many believe the taskbar is now more of a dock that reminds of macOS, Microsoft has also implemented a series of changes that prevent users from further customizing it just like they did in Windows 10 or earlier versions of Windows.
For example, the taskbar can no longer be moved to the top of the screen, something that would make the Windows 11 desktop feel even more like macOS.
Microsoft says it’s looking into feedback
Microsoft hasn’t explained why it removed these features, as the company just praised its new approach in the original Windows 11 announcement.
“We’ve simplified the design and user experience to empower your productivity and inspire your creativity. It’s modern, fresh, clean and beautiful. From the new Start button and taskbar to each sound, font and icon, everything was done intentionally to put you in control and bring a sense of calm and ease. We put Start at the center and made it easier to quickly find what you need. Start utilizes the power of the cloud and Microsoft 365 to show you your recent files no matter what platform or device you were viewing them on earlier, even if it was on an Android or iOS device,” Microsoft said.
But a suggestion posted in the Windows Feedback Hub is getting more and more votes, as users want to be able to move the taskbar to the top or the sides of the screen.
Microsoft has only promised to keep an eye on the feedback it receives, but for the time being, there’s no confirmation such features would be brought back.
