Windows phones are long gone, but Microsoft fanboys out there are still hoping that one day, the Redmond-based software giant would change its mind and release a mobile device powered by its very own operating system.

While right now Microsoft seems to be fully committed to Android as far as mobile hardware is concerned, with the Surface Duo alive and kicking, the dream of Windows phones still lives on, mostly thanks to the skilled community of developers trying all sorts of experiments.

Most recently, a group called Renegade Project has managed to get Windows 11 up and running on a OnePlus 6T, essentially bringing Microsoft’s latest operating system on an Android device.

According to a report, the OnePlus 6T wasn’t the only Android phone that the group managed to install Windows 11 on, as the same thing has been successful on several other Snapdragon 845-powered devices, including the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 and Poco F1. As it turns out, even the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is supposed to support Windows 11.

Room for improvements

The good news is that Windows 11 feels almost like home on Android hardware, as features like the touchscreen, USB, and even Bluetooth are working correctly.

There’s obviously room for improvements, especially as Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity don’t seem to be working for the time being, though developers say they continue their efforts on getting everything up and running.

Does this mean anything for the future of Windows 11? Not really, though it’s nice to see the new operating system landing on all kinds of devices. But if you plan to use one of these devices as your daily drivers, this would be quite a challenge without official support, so for the time being, all these projects are great for the sake of experimenting and that’s pretty much it.
