Public launch also expected later this year

Microsoft is already working on the next Windows 11 feature update, and the Insider program is a great way to try out what’s coming when the rollout starts (though Microsoft insists that some of the changes it’s trying out in the Dev channel may never see the daylight anyway or, at least, they don’t have a release date).

This year, however, Microsoft is expected to announce one major feature update for Windows 11, as the company has switched to a one release per year strategy, unlike in the Windows 10 days when it shipped two major updates every year.

Codenamed Sun Valley 2 and also referred to as Windows 11 version 22H2, this highly anticipated update could reach the RTM phase as soon as this month, according to @XenoPanther on Twitter.

Of course, there’s no guarantee this is accurate, and Microsoft could very well change the target date for this milestone if it comes across an important bug.

Windows 11 rollout still underway

But very important to know is that while the entire world is now waiting for this year’s major feature update for Windows 11, the rollout of the operating system is still underway.

In other words, not all eligible computers have been provided with the update to Windows 11, with Microsoft announcing back in January that the rollout was in the final stage.

“The upgrade offer to Windows 11 is entering its final phase of availability and is designated for broad deployment for eligible devices. Since the launch of Windows 11 in October, we have seen strong demand and preference for Windows 11 with people upgrading their eligible PCs at twice the rate we saw for Windows 10. Based on this trend, we are advancing the pace of the rollout faster than we originally announced and entering the final phase of availability for Windows 11 ahead of our initial plan of mid-2022,” Microsoft said on January 26.

At this point, we still don’t know when Windows 11 is supposed to reach broad availability.
