Microsoft rolled out Windows 10 version 2004, or May 2020 Update, earlier this year, and now the company is pushing it gradually to users across the world.

The release in waves is necessary to make sure that no major bugs hit a significant number of devices, as Microsoft plans to detect potential issues in the early phases and block the update from being installed on more systems that could be impacted.

Earlier this week, the update to version 2004 received the go-ahead for more devices, with several Surface owners confirming that they can now install the May update.

More specifically, this reddit thread here reveals that the Surface Pro X and the Surface Pro 5 are now seeing the update to version 2004 on Windows Update, which means that Microsoft has completed all tests and now these users should experience flawless performance.

Don’t force the update

Needless to say, if Windows 10 May 2020 Update is not available on Windows Update on your Surface, you really shouldn’t try to install it using other methods.

There’s a reason Microsoft doesn’t publish the update for everyone on Windows Update, and if you skip this limitation, you could end up struggling with bugs that you could otherwise avoid by simply waiting a little bit more until the company releases version 2004 for you.

I already installed Windows 10 May 2002 Update on my Surface Book 2 and everything seems to be running just fine with no major issues whatsoever. This shows that the update has already reached a pretty advanced reliability point, as I haven’t seen big problems reported by users either.

At this point, there’s still no ETA as to when general availability is supposed to be reached, but Windows 10 version 2004 should be ready for everybody by the time the version 20H2 update is finalized in the fall.
