The high CPU usage issue seems to be resolved

Windows 10 version 2004 is just around the corner, and while the changelog includes so many new features, the new feature update obviously comes with lots of other improvements under the hood.

One of them appears to be a fix for the infamous bug causing high CPU usage, with a discussion thread on reddit showing just how big of a difference the new version makes on an old computer.

The comparison that you see in the photo shows Windows 10 version 1909 (with the bug) and Windows 10 version 2004 (without the bug) running on the same hardware. This makes it very clear that the latter would provide a much smoother experience from one end to another.

“Microsoft have made substantial changes to Windows 10 Search in the way that it indexes files. The screenshot is from an old OptiPlex 7010 with 4 GB of RAM and a 250 GB 3.5" 7200 RPM HDD (an old unit I had lying around to test). Both screenshots are from clean installs updated (so there was no Windows Updating etc going on in the background) and were on YouTube watching a video. The one at version 1909 throttled the disc usage and the one at 2004 didn't,” the redditor who posted the comparison shot explains.

Windows 10 version 2004 expected next month

In case you’re wondering, the high CPU usage bug impacted both HDDs and SSDs, so it’s definitely good news that Microsoft eventually fixed it.

Windows 10 version 2004 is currently available for users in the Release Preview ring, with the rollout to production devices projected to kick off at some point in May.

Just like the previous feature updates, this new release will go live in stages, but alternative download methods, like the Media Creation Tool, will also be offered to install the new release without waiting for the automatic rollout.
