While Microsoft’s working around the clock to finalize testing of Windows 10 version 1809 and release it to users for the second time, more bugs keep showing up, making the company’s mission a lot more difficult.

Today, it’s a registry issue that’s coming into the spotlight, and according to a report from ghacks, it may be plaguing other versions of Windows 10 as well, including the April 2018 Update (version 1803). The most recent Windows 10 19H1 preview build is hit too.

By default, Windows 10 comes with a pre-defined task that automatically creates a backup of the registry whenever the system is idle. This helps make sure that the registry isn’t corrupted, and even if it does, you can restore it easily.

But as it turns out, this task no longer runs on some versions of Windows 10, and despite the registry backup task displayed as completed successfully, no backup was actually created.

No word on a potential fix

Microsoft hasn’t yet acknowledged the bug, but given that several other Windows 10 versions are affected as well, it could get fixed in a future cumulative update.

Windows 10 version 1809 itself is no longer available for download, as Microsoft pulled all download links after finding a bug that could delete user files during the upgrade. While this issue has already been resolved as part of the Insider program, it could take more time until the update goes live for everyone once again, mostly because of these bugs that keep showing up at a pace faster than anticipated.

The next Patch Tuesday, which is the date when Microsoft will release cumulative updates for all supported Windows 10 versions, will take place on November 13, so we still have to wait nearly two weeks for a potential fix.

Meanwhile, your only option is to switch to a third-party app that can create backups of the Windows registry.
