The backing up process fails with error 0x80070013

A bug in Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) breaks down the Backup and Recovery tool, and users claim they can no longer run this feature no matter the workaround they try.

In a post on Microsoft’s forums, several users confirm that they can’t create a backup of their data, as the process fails with various errors, including 0x80070013.

While this feature has been deprecated in Windows 10, the behavior is certainly unexpected, and users get no details as to why this is happening and how they can repair the issue.

“Same here on 2 different computers, one with an internal HDD for backup purposes, the other with an external one. Backup stops with error code 0x80070013 on both machines at every try. Neither of the dedicated backup drives is write protected. Very frustrating, since everything was working flawlessly before the latest update (1809, 17763.1),” one user says.

Windows 10 version 1809 rollout suspended

Microsoft deprecated the System Image Backup solution back in the Fall Creators Update and the company recommended users to switch to full-disk backup solutions from other vendors.

However, users claim everything has worked fine until they switched to the October 2018 Update.

“I'm having the same problem with Backup and Restore (Windows 7) on my Windows 10 computer running the latest 1809 version (October 2018 update). After reverting to the previous Windows 10 version (1803, April 2018 update), that backup program works again,” one user explains.

Windows 10 October 2018 Update has already been pulled earlier this month after Microsoft discovered a major bug removing users’ files during the upgrade. The company has already delivered a fix as part of the Windows Insider program, but the testing is still under way and no information is available as to when users could be once again allowed to download version 1809 for their systems.
