Microsoft still not planning a WordPad facelift

Microsoft’s Fluent Design language makeover in Windows 10 is under way, which means that apps are gradually receiving the visual facelift.

One of the apps not getting it though is WordPad, which continues to be one of the most popular tools bundled with Windows 10 these days.

And while Microsoft has focused a lot lately on Notepad, WordPad has barely received any love, especially when it comes to the visual update that so many people want.

A concept created by Zee-Al-Eid Ahmad Rana, who has until now designed lots of Fluent Design-based concepts for Windows 10, envisions a new and more modern look for WordPad, including features that users have been asking for since the Windows 7 era.

No WordPad goodies in version 2004

One particular feature that I like, besides the improved look, of course, is the search box that is integrated into the title bar and which would obviously come in super handy when working with large documents. I use search a lot in my documents, so having a search box in a more convenient place would really be useful.

But of course, I don’t expect Microsoft to make this happen overnight, albeit one feature that the software giant should add rather sooner than later is support for tabs. While tabs have been one of the most requested updates in Windows 10 overall, WordPad is one of the apps where they make much more sense, especially because they can enhance working with multiple documents substantially.

Whether or not WordPad would finally get a highly-anticipated update is something that remains to be seen, although it goes without saying this won’t happen overnight. The next Windows 10 feature update is just around the corner and should go live in May, of course without any significant improvements for WordPad.
