Microsoft has released an update for the Paint 3D app that allows users to save their projects in either GIF or MP4 video format.

Paint 3D is a modern interpretation of the classic Paint app that comes with more advanced capabilities and an increased focus on 3D content generation. It’s pre-installed in Windows 10 and offered alongside the classic version, though the latter could soon move to the Microsoft Store as an optional download.

As the main painting app in Windows, Paint 3D is getting most of Microsoft’s love, and a recent update brought functionality to export content to video formats.

First released to insiders earlier this year, this particular feature is bundled right into the saving UI at File > Save as > Video.

Update available in the Store

Paint 3D then provides a series of options to tweak the output file, including format (GIF/MP4), width and height, animation (with three settings available, namely turntable, swing, and jump and turn, speed, and number of loops). Depending on how large your project is, it can take longer to export it to video and some slowdowns might be experienced on your system.

The version bringing this functionality to Windows 10 users is 5.1806.20057.0 and can be installed right now from the Microsoft Store.

Paint 3D is evolving to become a rather professional photo editing tool as compared to the classic Paint app that provided only basic options. This doesn’t mean that the older release needs to go away, as many Windows 10 users still enjoy the easy way to perform simple tasks like drawing a shape, changing colors of certain objects, or making basic edits.

The classic Paint app is still there in Windows 10, but sooner or later it could be transferred to the Microsoft Store, while Paint 3D would be offered as the only such application in the operating system.
