Work on the next major Windows 10 feature update advances, and according to Microsoft’s roadmap, it should be finalized as soon as the next month.

As a result, the company signing off the RTM build is just a matter of time, and a new report indicates that we’re actually closer to this moment than we think. MSPU speculates that build 17746 may be at least an RTM candidate, though there’s obviously no confirmation in this regard. (Just as expected, Microsoft officials denied this is an RTM candidate and said that several builds would be released in the remaining weeks until launch).

Even if this information isn’t accurate, it makes sense for Microsoft to get closer to finalizing work on Windows 10 Redstone 5. Based on the company’s strategy of rolling out Windows 10 updates twice every year, Redstone 5 is due to be completed in September, while the public rollout should kick off in October.

Public rollout in October

While it’s a bit too early for Microsoft to sign off RTM, as we expect this to happen in late September, it’s pretty clear that all the work is now aimed at ironing out the remaining bugs and improving the performance of the operating system.

Windows 10 Redstone 5 could launch as October 2018 Update, based on a naming approach that was introduced by Microsoft with the previous update. Windows 10 April 2018 Update was originally expected to hit the market as Spring Creators Update, but the company eventually decided to rename it to better match the timing of its release.

At this point, there are no specifics on the naming of the Redstone 5 update either, but the October 2018 Update moniker does make sense at first glance.

Windows 10 Redstone 5 will bring a plethora of new features to Windows 10 users, including an eagerly-anticipated dark theme for File Explorer. As it typically happens in the case of new feature updates, insiders will be the first to get the RTM build, while everyone else will receive it shortly after that.
