Alleged leak provides look at next Windows 10 update

Microsoft is now getting closer to the final development stages of the next Windows 10 update, and the company has already started thinking of names that could be used when the release is ready.

According to a recent leak courtesy of Twitter user WalkingCat, who has a very good track on Microsoft scoops, Windows 10 Redstone 5 could launch as “October 2018 Update.”

This means Microsoft would no longer use fancy names for its OS updates, like Creators Update, but stick with a naming approach that makes more sense considering the bi-annual release schedule that the company has embraced.

Windows 10 Redstone 5 launching as October 2018 Update isn’t necessarily a surprise given that the current release is called April 2018 Update, and at the same time, it helps both Microsoft and users easily determine the OS version they are running.

April 2018 Update naming saga

The April 2018 Update itself has its own story regarding the name, as previously, it was believed this would become the third Creators Update for Windows 10. First, it was the original Creators Update, followed by the Fall Creators Update, and the April 2018 Update was then rumored to be called “Spring Creators Update.”

Microsoft eventually picked a moniker that aligns with the release date, at the same time, making the first step towards what seems to be a new naming strategy that would be continued for the next releases.

As usual, the software giant itself hasn’t confirmed the new name of the Redstone 5 update and further changes can be made overnight at any point, though we expect the first references in official documentation to be discovered soon.

With Redstone 5 entering the last development phases, it’s all just a matter of time until more information emerges on the name the company plans to use.
