Microsoft moves the controls to the Settings app

Windows 10 build 17017 comes with one important change for users who previously relied on the Task Manager to keep an eye on the apps configured to run at startup: all the options are moved to the Settings app.

Microsoft says this is a change happening as part of its effort to make the Settings app the one destination for all configuration options in Windows 10, and if no modifications occur in the meantime, the final version of Windows 10 Redstone 4 is projected to bring startup app controls in Settings for everyone.

Moving everything to Settings

The new menu is placed under Settings > Apps > Startup and users can easily toggle a switch to disable or enable a specific item. Just like Task Manager, the menu displays the impact on startup speed, thus helping users make a decision on specific applications that could slow down the system.

“The list of apps that are configured to run at startup or user log-in is currently maintained via the Startup tab in Task Manager. As part of our ongoing effort to consolidate our settings experience, now you can configure them in Settings!” Microsoft says.

Microsoft moving configuration settings to the Settings app is not a new thing, as the company has been trying to transfer items from the Control Panel to the new screen from the first version of Windows 10. The company says that the final goal is to get rid of the Control Panel altogether, but in the Fall Creators Update, there’s still a bunch of settings that survived the cut.

Without a doubt, Control Panel’s days are numbered, and sooner or later Microsoft will complete moving all options to the Settings app. The Windows 10 Redstone 4 appears to bring several changes in this regard, but it remains to be seen if this will be the version that will finally wave goodbye to the good old Control Panel.
