Windows 10 May 2020 Update is finally here, and in addition to a series of new features, it also comes with changes concerning the ones that are already part of the operating system.
More specifically, Microsoft is deprecating and removing a number of features from the OS, and the company has just revealed all of them in dedicated support articles today.
First and foremost, the features that are deprecated (no longer being actively developed and could be removed in a future update):
- Companion Device Framework
- Legacy Microsoft Edge
- Dynamic Disks
As we know already, Microsoft has already launched a new Microsoft Edge browser based on the Chromium engine, so while the legacy version will stick around for a little longer for compatibility reasons, it’s not getting any new improvements in the long term.
And of course, it’ll go dark at some point in the future, as Microsoft will only focus on the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge going forward.
Removed features
And then, there are the features that are being removed in Windows 10 version 2004:
- Cortana
- Windows To Go
- Mobile plans and Messaging apps
Seeing Cortana mentioned in this list is more or less surprising, but in fact, Microsoft actually refers to the consumer features that the company is giving up on with this new release.
“Cortana has been updated and enhanced in the Windows 10 May 2020 Update. With these changes, some previously available consumer skills such as music, connected home, and other non-Microsoft skills are no longer available,” the company explains.
And last but not least, Windows To Go going dark is no surprise, as the feature already reached the deprecated phase in Windows 10 version 1903, so being discontinued in this new release is something that many people could see coming.
