Windows Spotlight is coming to the desktop, at last

Windows Spotlight is a pretty cool feature that allows users to automatically change the lock screen wallpaper on their Windows 10 device using high-quality backgrounds provided by Bing.

And needless to say, given it helps keep the lock screen fresh, all with pretty nice wallpapers, many people were wondering how come Microsoft never thought this would be a great addition to the desktop feature arsenal.

I mean, pretty much everybody uses a wallpaper on the desktop, why not allowing them to use Windows Spotlight and thus get a fresh background every day?

For some reason, Microsoft didn’t think this was worth the effort, so most people just had to turn to other ways to do the whole thing, including third-party wallpaper changers or simply setting up their own collection of photos and then using Windows 10 to automatically cycle them.

But as it turns out, Microsoft has finally received the message, so it’s now working on bringing Windows Spotlight to the desktop.

The latest Windows 10 preview build comes with this feature, though for now, it’s not activated. Twitter user Albacore has managed to get it up and running, and as you can see in this screenshot here, the feature can be enabled right from the Settings screen from the background settings.

Once activated, Windows Spotlight automatically downloads the Bing wallpaper of the day and set it as the new desktop background, working just like you’d expect it to work.

For the time being, it’s not yet clear when Microsoft is projected to bring this feature to users out there, but the next Windows 10 feature update is projected to land in the spring of this year as a smaller pack of improvements. A major release is due in the fall of the year.
