Major design change planned for 2020, it seems

Microsoft is reportedly working on another major change in terms of user interface, as the Fluent Design language will soon bring us rounded corners for apps on Windows, Xbox, Office, and all the other products.

This is according to a report from Zac Bowden, who also posted a screenshot of what he claims to be an early version of a redesigned search UI currently being tested in Windows 10 20H1 preview builds.

Windows 10 20H1 is the feature update projected to roll out in the spring of 2020, and it is currently available for insiders in the Skip Ahead and Fast rings. This new design, however, isn’t public just yet.

By the looks of things, Microsoft wants to replace the straight corners with rounded versions in the upcoming Windows 10 update, all as part of the Fluent Design language that has already been expanded from the operating system to other products as well.

Received with mixed reactions

This design would come in line with the tab design in the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge, albeit it goes without saying that Microsoft would have to redesign a significant part of the OS to boast this look.

Nevertheless, there’s no doubt a new change in terms of looks in Windows 10 might not be received well. While some believe this looks good, others think rounded corners push us back to the Windows Vista era when such a design approach made more sense on the desktop.

For the time being, however, it’s important to keep in mind that it’s all just an experiment, and depending on the feedback, Microsoft could have a change of mind. The cited source claims we’ll “see it all over Windows, Xbox, Office, and other products in the coming months/years,” so it shouldn’t take too long before insiders get to try out the very first implementation.
