More ideas on how to revamp the Windows file manager

Microsoft is currently working on a dark theme for File Explorer, and this could be released with Windows 10 Redstone 5 in the fall, but other than that, the file manager has received only minor improvements lately.

As it typically happens with features that haven’t been updated in a long time, the user community has proposed several ideas on how to revamp the UI of File Explorer, some of which appeared to be more or less easy for Microsoft to implement in a future Windows 10 update.

One of the concepts that are worth a look is the one embedded below and created by Amit Shukla, who envisions both dark and light themes for File Explorer, all based on Fluent Design.

Microsoft itself is bringing Fluent Design across Windows 10, and the company has most recently expanded the new design language to context menus with the acrylic effect, but work in this regard still advanced slowly.

Ribbon for the win

The concept highlights some of the key features that should continue to be available in a revamped version of File Explorer no matter what, including the ribbon. Launched as part of Microsoft Office 2007, the ribbon is now an essential part of File Explorer and it gives easy access to key features and options.

And according to the concept creator, there’s no doubt this feature should stick around for a little longer, though at first glance this might be a challenge in terms of design given the addition of new functionality like tab support. In one concept idea, the ribbon is moved to the bottom of the screen, though it goes without saying that this is a change that many might find unhandy at first.

It remains to be seen if any of the ideas presented here would make their way to File Explorer, but for the time being, the only thing to be excited for is the dark theme coming as part of Redstone 5.
