Microsoft makes new change to Windows 10 updates

Microsoft has recently announced that Windows 10 cumulative updates will also integrate servicing stack updates for easier deployment on all devices.

The change is happening this month and is the new approach that the company will use going forward, with SSU and LCU packages to be offered as part of a single installer on both the Windows Server Update Services, or WSUS, and the Microsoft Catalog.

Integrating servicing stack updates in Windows 10 cumulative updates isn’t necessary on Windows Update because the update service takes care of deploying the correct SSU anyway.

“Our goal is for all IT administrators, whether managing devices on-premises or from the cloud, to experience the simplicity of having a single cumulative monthly update to deploy that includes the month’s cumulative fixes and the appropriate servicing stack updates for that month, if applicable,” Microsoft explains.

“To move forward with receiving a single monthly cumulative update package containing the SSU and LCU, you will first need to broadly deploy the September 2020 SSU or any later SSU on all Windows 10, version 2004 devices in your organization.”

Change already in effect starting this Patch Tuesday

This new change comes with a series of benefits, and one of the most important is that users no longer need to figure out what servicing stack update they need to install for a specific cumulative update.

In other words, when you manually download cumulative updates, you can be sure that the required SSU is also available simply because it’s part of the same package. At the same time, downloading separate packages is no longer necessary, as one update takes care of everything.

The change is happening this month with the new cumulative updates that were published on September 8 as part of the latest Patch Tuesday cycle and will also be used on the next patching releases.
