The update was shipped to Insider devices this week

The most recent Windows 10 cumulative update shipped by Microsoft to users enrolled in the Beta and Release Preview channels of the Windows Insider program is now causing fatal crashes on some devices.

KB5001391 is therefore pushing systems into a Green Screen of Death (GSOD) loop after installation, and as it turns out, the only workaround right now is to just remove the update completely.

The update was released by Microsoft to bring the News and Interests feature to more devices in the Windows Insider program, therefore preparing it for a wider rollout possibly in Windows 10 version 21H1.

Posts on reddit (via Neowin) show that the problem isn’t exactly widespread, though it hits an important number of devices and is certainly something that Microsoft should look into as soon as possible.

Windows 10 version 21H1 almost ready

And it’s because this glitch affects an update that activates the News and Interests feature on Windows 10 version 21H1 preview builds only a few weeks before this particular release is scheduled to reach the RTM phase.

Version 21H1 is due to launch next month, so the RTM is imminent now. It’ll be just a small update with the focus on under the hood improvements, as per Microsoft itself.

“Based on feedback and learnings during the past year of extensive remote work, learning and play, version 21H1 will be delivered with servicing technology (like that used for the monthly update process and how 20H2 was delivered).  Windows 10, version 21H1 will have a scoped set of features improving security, remote access and quality. The features we are releasing in this update are focused on the core experiences that customers have told us they’re relying on most right now,” Microsoft says.

The rollout of Windows 10 version 21H1 should start by the end of the next month.
